Well, it seems that there isn't a deal for the rooms on the lower floor of the library as I reported before....still, Word on the Street (WOTS) is proceeding so maybe there's a tent somewhere for the comic book community...gotta be rough trying to manage an event that takes place at the central library while the workers are on strike...hopefully the producers have come to some agreement with the unions...as for Writing.wise we're getting the publicity ready and it should be out there next week...meanwhile, I'm getting ready to give a presentation at The Shebeen Club's website here next meeting on Oct. 16, 2007...hope to see you there...
Well, it looks like we've got a venue...Radha Yoga and Eatery...it's a yoga place with edge...they are on the top floor of a building that houses the Brickhouse Bar and they're in Chinatown...here's a description from their website "Located in a 101 year-old building in Chinatown, radha's wood floors and old brick walls create a warm, friendly ambience. Big windows overlooking an old oak tree and growing cityscape are reminders of the contemporary world we live in." I will be sealing the deal on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 (well, signing papers anyway). If you're curious, they're here.
Well, I had a partner meeting on Weds., Sept. 19, 2007...of course, I got stood up by one party and someone else couldn't manage to send an alternate even though I'd suggested arranging for one (when I first set up the meeting) because it was important to get things sorted...oh well, I guess not every single partner thought it was that important...perhaps I've been having delusions of grandeur (laughing gently to myself...next I check into the place with the special designer jackets that tie in the back)...anyway, it worked out with the folks who did get there although I still can't give any details since I want to confirm that I understood everything correctly...plus, I'm a tease (hee, hee, hee)
At this point, I'm hoping that I'll be able to nail a deal with the venue we want...the ticketing is going to be managed by the local chapter of the Society for Technical Communication website here...I'm booked for Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007 at The Shebeen Club website here to talk about Writing.wise, i.e. the inside skinny on organizing a literary type event, and hopefully lure a few volunteers to help out.
Well, Word on the Street (WOTS) website here takes place next Sunday, Sept. 30,2007. Even though the library folks are on strike, they seem to have struck a deal and the rooms on the lower concourse will be open. I wonder where the picketers will be. Are we going to crossing picket lines to go to WOTS? Maybe they'll give special dispensation. Anyway, one of the Writing.wise partners, Vancouver Comicon website here will be occupying a room on the lower concourse.
kc dyer has agreed to be the moderator for the event. YES! She's a YA author who is also coordinating the Surrey International Writers Conference (SIWC) and for their website, click here. Back to kc dyer, Here's her blog click here and her website click here. And for anyone who doesn't want to click a lot, here's how she's described on her website:
Btw, she's moderating the history panel at SIWC in October this year.kc dyer was born in Calgary, and has lived and worked in Toronto, Seattle and Vancouver. Currently, she lives with her children and other animals just outside Vancouver, British Columbia. Her books include SEEDS OF TIME, SECRET OF LIGHT and SHADES OF RED. While awaiting the publication of two upcoming novels, (MS. ZEPHYR'S NOTEBOOK and A WALK THROUGH THE WINDOW) kc is hard at work on the first novel in a new series of stories set in the United Kingdom.
Well, I've got my fingers crossed that we'll be able to entice a poet into helping us kickoff the event...I think it would be the crowning touch...there may be a new partner but nothing firm yet...I'm probably going to shut down my efforts to get more groups involved next week so that we (the already committed to the event) can move ahead...we really need a venue...
Eyes brightened and ears pricked up when I mentioned to my partners that I was trying to land someone who'd written a book on intellectual property "Copyright and creative freedom." Today she said yes to participating. Mira T. Sundara Rajan musician, Canada Research Chair in Intellectual Property Law, and law professor at the University of British Columbia will be a panelist at Writing.wise. (Aside: Yay! If there's one thing you can guarantee it's that writers are interested in intellectual property and copyright. This should mean we have an interesting night.) Plus she has a great back story. Sundara Rajan's great grandfather was a writer who was exiled from British India. Later in life he was lauded as the country's national poet and his copyright given as a gift to the people of India. He died at age 39. (I'm madly curious as to how that evolved.)
Getting back to Weriting'wise, we now have five panelists (Shari Ulrich songwriter and musician; Sue Thomas new media expert from the UK; Kaare Andrewss, comic book writer, artist, and filmmaker; and Ian Verchere, a founder of Radical Entertainment, a games developer with over 50 titles to his credit; a creative consultant for Roald Dahl's literary estate, a scriptwriter with Douglas Coupland, etc., and Sundara Rajan)
The moderator position is going to be a tricky one. I need somebody who is charming, thinks on their feet, and can help supply the glue that will keep this diverse panel together. My first choice was Jay Ingram of the Discovery Channel. He turned me down in the nicest way. Oh well, I imagine someone will emerge.
